feat(oracles): lint oracle files and return reports to coding agents - #2236
Conversation
Add an ESLint plugin for oracle files (scripts/eslint-plugin-oracle/) with the oracle/no-disabled rule. It reports `.only`, a `.skip` or `.todo` that switches off a body, `.skipIf`/`.runIf` conditions that name no replay, Playwright's unconditional runtime skips, and generated properties limited to one unpinned run. The rules have no inline exception. scripts/agent-lint-feedback.mjs runs the oracle rules in a pass that ignores inline directives, so an eslint-disable comment cannot silence them. It serves the Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, and Copilot hooks after each edit and at the end of a turn, `pnpm lint:changed`, `pnpm lint:oracles` in CI, and the pre-commit hook. Pre-commit ESLint now runs in chunks to avoid running out of memory on large commits. Remove the skipped random campaign for the #2139 known gap; the fixed-seed `it.fails` cell still pins it, and its replay name is unregistered so a replay request fails loudly. Replace the rule's "names a replay" heuristic, which wrong-branch conditionals, inverted conditions, the node:path module, and environment seeds all passed. A one-run options object now needs a `path` (a recorded counterexample) or a seed that is a number literal or a constant bound to one. `skipIf` accepts only `oracleReplayRequested()` from oracle-config, and `runIf` is always reported. The rule also reports Playwright `fixme`, context skips such as `ctx.skip()`, and runtime skips other than `browserName !== '<browser>'`. oraclePropertyOptions now returns one run for a path replay, so six campaign sites drop their own one-run conditional. The OPFS diagnostics oracle uses the shared replay variables, and the replay calibration fixture overrides its run count after the replay options are chosen. The enforcing pass lists tracked oracle files with git, so it skips untracked worktrees, and it fails when no main branch is available to compare against. CONTRIBUTING.md states that lint:changed runs only the oracle rules. Stale prose about the removed replay name is corrected. Refs #2234 Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
The previous commit made oraclePropertyOptions run a path replay once. utils.test.ts still expected the base run count for the named property. Refs #2234 Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>

Use one run for diagnostic replay.
When diagnosticPath is set, pass numRuns: 1. FastCheck can otherwise execute the configured campaign budget from the selected path.

Address CodeRabbit's review of 012f406: - oracleReplayRequested() means a path replay. A seed without a path only reseeds the random campaigns, so fixed tests keep running. - The OPFS diagnostics oracle takes its replay and random options from oraclePropertyOptions, so a path replay runs once and a seed-only run reseeds only the random campaign. - oracle/no-disabled accepts skipIf(oracleReplayRequested()) only when the helper is imported from oracle-config, so a local function of that name does not pass. - The context-skip check resolves the binding through scope, so a context captured by a nested callback is reported and a shadowing variable is not. 🎯 Changes
Coding agents now get oracle lint reports while they work. After an agent edits an oracle file, or when it ends a turn, the repository's hooks lint the file. The model receives each report beside the tool result. This is step 1 of #2234.
The problem:
AGENTS.mdforbids the shortcuts that make an oracle pass without enforcing its law. Prose did not stop them, because nothing made a shortcut visible while the agent still worked. This PR makes the shortcuts that a syntactic check can see visible at the moment an agent writes them. For example, after an edit that adds
.only, Claude Code shows this to the model:The rule:
oracle/no-disabledThe new ESLint plugin in
scripts/eslint-plugin-oracle/applies to files whose names containoracle. Its first rule reports the edits that stop a law from running while every test still passes:.onlyon a test or suite..skip,.todo, or Playwright's.fixmeon a test that has a body, inline or passed by name. An empty placeholder such asit.skip(name, () => {})disables nothing, so the rule allows it. Replays register these placeholders.ctx.skip()..skipIfor.runIf, unless the call is exactly.skipIf(oracleReplayRequested()). A replay may stand a test aside. The shared helper fixes the polarity, so no condition can switch the test off in ordinary runs.test.skip()andtest.fixme(), unless the condition isbrowserName !== '<browser>': a control that only one browser supports.numRuns: 1, or a base of 1 fororacleRunsororaclePropertyOptions. A replay pins its history with apath. A witness pins it with a seed that is a number literal or a constant bound to one. The rule also allows one run inside anexpectmatcher orfc.sample.The rule has no inline exception. This is a maintainer decision. An exception comment would let an agent grant itself an exception in its own diff. A true exception needs a maintainer to change the rule in a reviewed PR.
The enforcing pass ignores
eslint-disableESLint cannot protect one rule from an
eslint-disablecomment. For example, a blanket/* eslint-disable */on line 1 silences every rule in the file. Soscripts/agent-lint-feedback.mjsruns the oracle rules in a separate pass withnoInlineConfig. That pass ignores every inline directive. The root ESLint config also runs the rules, so editors show them, but a directive can silence them there. The pass needs no type information. A typical oracle file takes about 28 ms, and the largest (26,000 lines) takes about 1.2 s. The repository config builds a TypeScript program and takes several seconds per file. That speed is too slow for each edit.
Delivery to each agent harness
One script serves every harness. A thin adapter reads the harness's hook input and writes its response format:
.claude/settings.jsonPostToolUse, exit 2 with stderrStop, exit 2.codex/hooks.jsonPostToolUseonapply_patch, exit 2Stop, exit 2, or{}when clean.gemini/settings.jsonAfterTool,additionalContextAfterAgent,decision: deny.github/hooks/oracle-lint.jsonpostToolUse,additionalContextagentStop,decision: blockAn edit hook sees only the harness's own edit tools. The end-of-turn hook lints every file that the branch changed, so it also catches an edit made through a shell command. It blocks the end of a turn once. When the harness reports
stop_hook_active, the hook does not block again, so a report that the agent cannot fix does not loop. When the hook input names no file, the edit hook lints the changed files instead. The same pass runs in these places:
pnpm lint:changedlints the oracle files that the branch changed.AGENTS.mdtells agents to run it after a shell edit or in a harness without hooks. It does not replacepnpm lint. Withoutorigin/mainormainto compare against, it fails with an error.pnpm lint:oracleslints every tracked oracle file. Git leaves out untracked worktrees. A new step in the Lint CI job runs it.The pre-commit
eslint --fixnow runs in chunks of 40 files. ESLint ran out of memory on a commit of more than about 100 files in #2168.Replay selection moves into the shared helpers
The one-run law needs replays to state their history in one place. So this PR changes two shared helpers in
packages/db/tests/oracle-config.ts:oraclePropertyOptionsreturns one run for a path replay. Six campaign sites drop their owncampaign === 'replay' ? { numRuns: 1 } : {}conditional. In those files, thereplaycampaign runs exactly when a replay of its property's path runs, so the runs do not change.oracleReplayRequested()tells a test to stand aside during a path replay. Two sites use it. A seed without a path only reseeds the random campaigns, so every test still runs. The rule accepts the helper only when the file imports it fromoracle-config.The OPFS worker diagnostics oracle had its own replay variables. It now takes its replay and random options from
oraclePropertyOptions, and usesTANSTACK_DB_ORACLE_SEED,TANSTACK_DB_ORACLE_PATH, andTANSTACK_DB_ORACLE_PROPERTY=opfs-worker.diagnostics, like the other oracles.TANSTACK_DB_ORACLE_RUNS_MULTIPLIERreplacesTANSTACK_DB_OPFS_DIAGNOSTIC_ORACLE_RUNS.The guarded replay protocol expects one run for a path replay now. Its calibration fixture sets the zero-run fault after it gets the replay options, so the guard still rejects a replay with zero runs.
Violations that this PR fixes
The first version of the rules found two problems on
main. This PR fixes both, so the rule lands with no suppressions:persisted-oracle.test.tsskipped the random campaign for the known gap Persistence: a follower shows its leader's rows after a cache-claim rotation #2139. The skip enforced nothing, so this PR removes the campaign. The fixed-seedit.failscell still pins the gap. The fix for Persistence: a follower shows its leader's rows after a cache-claim rotation #2139 adds the campaign back. This PR also removespersistence.follower-generation-noticefrom the property registry and the replay selector. A replay request for that name now fails withunknown oracle property. Before, the request ran nothing and passed.eslint-disable-next-lineinproxy-oracle.test.tsnow names the one rule it disables (no-sparse-arrays).Limits
claude -psession wrote an oracle file with.only. The edit hook returned the report as a blocking result. The end-of-turn hook blocked the stop once, and the next stop ended the session.codex exec0.163. Even a loggingSessionStarthook did not run, with the worktree trusted and hook trust bypassed. An interactive session with/hooksmust check whether Codex loads the project.codex/layer.matchergoes or name the edit tools. The fallback to the changed files covers a missing path./hooks.CONTRIBUTING.mdstates this. For some users, Antigravity CLI replaced Gemini CLI.const run = it.skip, or a registration inside anif. Apathor seed from configuration that ordinary runs do not set also passes. The stacked follow-up feat(oracles): select every oracle replay through shared helpers #2237 moves each oracle's replay selection onto the shared helpers, so the rule reports these forms.Next steps from #2234

This PR changes no production behavior. It changes test tooling, the replay helpers, and some oracle files. No oracle edit changes a law:
main, anit.skipdisabled thepersisted-oracle.test.tscampaign that this PR removes, so it enforced nothing. This PR keeps the fixed-seedit.failscell for Persistence: a follower shows its leader's rows after a cache-claim rotation #2139 as it was. The coverage-map entry for SQLite persistence now says that the random campaign stays out until the fix.proxy-oracle.test.tsedit changes a comment only.Evidence for the rule and the pass:
it.skipIf(true)anddescribe.runIf(false).it.skip(name, helper).{ seed: Date.now(), numRuns: 1 }and{ seed: process.env.SEED, numRuns: 1 }.replayRequested ? {} : { numRuns: 1 }, andrunIf(replay.replayPath !== undefined).skipIf(path.sep === '\\').ctx.skip(),test.fixme(name, body), and a line-1/* eslint-disable */.oracleReplayRequested, andctx.skip()inside a nested callback. CodeRabbit found these.pnpm lint:oraclesreports nothing for the tracked oracle files./* eslint-disable */andit.onlyfails every mode of the pass: edit hook, end-of-turn hook,lint:changed,lint:oracles, and pre-commit.✅ Checklist
