Two inbound-decode deviations from the capture, fixed as one job: a float-spelled timestamp was refused where the capture accepts it, and an over-long frame was accepted where the capture's tuple rejects it.

Closes #960.
Closes #961.

What the capture does, and what this does now

frame before capture now
"created_at": 1700000000.0 Invalid timestamp accepted accepted as 1700000000
"created_at": 1700000000.5 Invalid timestamp Expected integer, received float same string as the capture
"kind": 1.0 Number must be greater than or equal to 0 accepted accepted as Kind(1)
"kind": 18446744073709551616 saturated accepted refused, ADR 0002's wording
["CLOSE","c1","junk"] accepted Array must contain at most 2 element(s) same string
["CLOSE",42,"junk"] Invalid input Invalid input unchanged
["REQ","s1",{…},"junk"] refused refused unchanged

Every string above was measured by running the capture's own messageSchema under zod 3.25.76, not read from its source.

The ordering is the subtle part. The arity check runs after each arm's element checks, which is what makes ["CLOSE",42,"junk"] keep Invalid input while ["CLOSE","c1","junk"] is refused on length. A frame that is both over-long and dirty therefore keeps the element's message; that remaining difference is recorded in the decoder's module doc and tracked in #979 rather than hidden.

How

One shared exactly(items, expected) arity helper and one integer_value normaliser in crates/nostream-core/src/messages.rs, called from EVENT, AUTH and CLOSE and from the two numeric fields. REQ and COUNT are untouched and are not routed through the helper — their bounds already matched and unifying them would have split one rule across two mechanisms.

Each rule has a single owner, named in the spec's rule-ownership table and enforced by five greps whose counts are stated with their base values: the message strings occur only in filter.rs, the created_at window is validation::CREATED_AT_LIMIT with no 1e10 left in the crate, and the three refusals' owners each carry an ADR 0002 pointer.

Two corrections to the issues being closed

Both issues were partly wrong about their own subject, and the branch follows the capture as measured:

Both issues carry these corrections in a comment, so a reader arriving from the ticket sees them.

Verification

  • cargo test -p nostream-core --test wire_codec: 22 → 26 tests, all passing. Red first: the tests were committed at 2def634 with src/ byte-identical to base, and ran 22 passed; 4 failed with each base answer quoted in build.md.
  • The five repository commands at the final head: fmt clean, both clippy passes clean, workspace 906 passed / 0 failed in debug and release, release build clean; wire_parity 5, ts_case_parity 4.
  • The approver re-ran all of it, re-measured both sides of every behaviour (a Rust probe against the built crate, messageSchema under zod), and reproduced the red-before by running the head's tests over base's source.

Review

Four rounds. Security passed in round 1 on the acceptance-widening surface (measured: the admitted value set is unchanged, only spellings widened; NaN/Infinity cannot reach the fractional check; no panic on the new paths). Code passed in round 1 and round 2, re-running the capture over 27 frames. Architecture returned CHANGES three times, every finding about single ownership of a rule — the first two about duplicates and a missing tracker, the third about the fix itself restating what filter.rs owns — and passed in round 4.

Notes

  • Commit hooks did not run: .husky/pre-commit drives the legacy pnpm checks and its .husky/_/husky.sh is absent in the worktree, so commits used HUSKY=0 git commit --no-verify.
  • The filter's created-at endpoint is pinned by no test. Mutating the window 100× still leaves filter_schema_parity at 54/54 green; the nearest invalid row is 167× the limit. The substitution made here is provably behaviour-identical (10^10 < 2^53, so the cast is exact), but a boundary case at CREATED_AT_LIMIT ± 1 is worth its own issue.
  • Out of scope and tracked: the decoder's wider error-model difference — a wrong-typed field says Invalid input in the capture and the field's own message here — is Port the capture aborted-union detail: a wrong-typed field answers Invalid input, not the field message #979, whose body carries the measured table and the two test rows that move with a fix.

…d-arity frame

Four tests against measured capture answers: an integer-valued float created_at or kind
is accepted, a genuine fraction answers Expected integer, received float, and EVENT,
AUTH and CLOSE refuse a frame longer than their tuple with Array must contain at most 2
element(s) while the lower bound and the wrong-typed element keep their messages.

Each failed on the base tree with the base answer (#960, #961).
… client frame

integer_value is zod's z.number().int().min(0) in zod's order, applied to created_at and
kind, so 1700000000.0 and 1.7e9 are the integers they denote and 1700000000.5 answers
Expected integer, received float. exactly refuses a frame past its tuple's arity with
the capture's tuple message, after the element checks.

The kind fit, the timestamp window and the shared wording each have one definition
(filter::U64_RANGE_END, filter::KIND_DOES_NOT_FIT, validation::CREATED_AT_LIMIT), and the
module doc lists the decoder's deliberate differences from the capture (#960, #961).
AC12 of the spec reads the difference list for the union abort by name.
…ivergence one owner each

Round-1 review: exactly now states when it is called (after the element checks, so
["CLOSE",42,"junk"] stays Invalid input); the filter since/until window uses
validation::CREATED_AT_LIMIT instead of a second 1e10; and the module doc separates the two
decided differences from the open aborted-union gap, which now names the capture as
authoritative and cites #979.

integer_value also states the caller-bounds-then-casts obligation that keeps its cast exact.
The Decided list named the kind refusal only. ADR 0002:125-129 records two messages, and the
limit half is reachable through this decoder as a REQ/COUNT filter field, where the capture
accepts the frame and the port refuses it. Naming it keeps the list exhaustive in the class
round 1 established.
…ad of restating it

Round-3 review: the Decided bullet had become a second copy of the rule validate_filter
documents. It now names both values and points at filter::U64_RANGE_END, KIND_DOES_NOT_FIT and
validate_limit, quoting neither wording; U64_RANGE_END and validate_limit gain the one-line ADR
0002 pointer the ownership row claims for them.

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no actionable issues were found.

Summary

The decoder accepts integer-valued float spellings for created_at and kind, and rejects extra elements in EVENT, AUTH, and CLOSE.

  • Event numbers accept whole-valued decimal spellings.
  • Fixed client frames now reject extra items.
