docs(oracles): score oracle-first work and add declared reach - #2233
Conversation
Agents kept taking the shortcut path: change production first, then fit the oracle with a relaxed comparison, an exclusion, a model rule that matches the new output, or one pinned example. The guidance already said not to. This change makes the economics explicit and adds one mechanical check. - AGENTS.md "How oracle work is scored": the oracle-first and shortcut paths and their costs, extra credit for proven oracle improvements and light production code, heavy penalties for model hacking and the other audited shortcuts, and a required evidence block (law, reach, RED, GREEN, mutant, limits). - ORC-015 declared reach, and `createOracleReach` in packages/db/tests/oracle-reach.ts: a generated property declares the states its laws need and fails when too few histories reach one. - oracle-authoring: the oracle-first order of work. oracle-review: an audit list for the penalized shortcuts. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Make the reach assertions independent of replay environment variables.
If TANSTACK_DB_ORACLE_SEED is set, createOracleReach skips assertReached(). This test and the minimum-count test then fail because both expect an exception. Run these tests with an explicit non-replay configuration, or isolate the replay environment before constructing the helper.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Reject a minimum that disables the reach check.
If a caller sets minimum to 0, assertReached() passes when no history reaches a declared state. Reject values that are not positive safe integers before creating the counter.

Agents in this repository often take a shortcut when they fix a bug in an area that an oracle owns. They change production first. Then they make the oracle pass with a relaxed comparison, an exclusion, a model rule that matches the new output, or one pinned example.
AGENTS.mdand the oracle guide already tell them not to. The guidance did not stop the shortcut, because nothing showed that it costs more than the careful path. This PR makes the cost explicit and adds one mechanical check.
The scoring section
AGENTS.mdgets a new section, "How oracle work is scored", near the top. It describes two paths for each fix:The section names the auditors. It gives extra credit for a proven oracle improvement, for an independent and short model, and for production code that is light in shipped bytes. It lists the shortcuts that auditors penalize heavily: production first, model hacking, unreachable claims, quiet exclusions, pinned-only coverage, "pre-existing" as a dismissal, and no mutant. It also requires an evidence block (law, reach, RED, GREEN, mutant, limits) for every behavior change in an oracle-owned area.
The example in the section comes from PR #2168. A production-first rewrite of reload handling there needed four more review rounds and about ten follow-up commits. A grammar-first pass then found the last defect on its first run.
Declared reach
A generated property can pass any number of runs and still check nothing in the state its law is about. PR #2168 had three such cases. A truncate step could never land while a reload was in flight. A direct subscriber existed only on eager sources. A lifecycle oracle subscribed without initial state.
createOracleReachinpackages/db/tests/oracle-reach.tsmakes reach a test result. A property declares the states its laws need, and its driver callsreach(state)when a history enters one.assertReached()fails for each state that fewer histories entered than the stated minimum. A replay of one seed or path skips the check. The new rubric requirement ORC-015 asks for declared reach when a pull request adds or changes an important generated property. It also applies when a pull request cites one as evidence for a bug-class fix.Several oracles already count reach in their own way, for example the subscription lifecycle history oracle. This PR does not convert them. PR #2168 will adopt the helper in the source-health oracle, where reviewers found the unreachable states.
